There are many versions of software that allow us to share files over the internet; although they all do essentially the same thing they are very different in the way they approach the same problem. Ares Ultra differs from many of the other filesharing applications because it is so inoffensively easy to use. Turn it on, select your files, download. Simple as that. It also plays very nicely with AOL, too, which many others fail to do. Worth considering if you’re stuck with AOL.

The main drawback to Ares Ultra is this: it’s so simple to use. While this doesn’t sound like much of a problem it can lead to some of the more complex operations being hidden well inside the application’s menus.

The new 3g iPhone will meet this shortfall and many will pick it up.

Sony’s approach to its business in the past has been one of assertion and force. With the ‘ownership’ of rights to music comes a guaranteed emolument. People aren’t too sure what it means to ‘own’ music, however, and recent years has seen a dramatic climb in people enjoying music downloads, for free. Sony’s previous tactic has been to bully the small person into submission. Now it is joining forces with Nokia and We7 to offer unlimited music downloads to those very same small people. Amazed? So are we.

This comes at the same time as a whole raft of other agreements between suitors to offer music downloads to users or customers of companies such as Napster, O2, Vodafone and 24-7 Entertainment. O2 and Vodafone are hot on the heels of Nokia’s example and will, it is predicted, offer unlimited music downloads to their customers with the help of Napster’s technology.
